 BANGABANDHU SHEIKH MUJIBUR   RAHMAN 

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the greatest leader of Bangladesh as well as one of the greatest leaders in the world. It is he who led the.Bengalees to liberate the country from the oppressive rule of Pakistan. He was born on March 17, 1920 in Tungipara upazila in the district of Gopalganj. As a student, he was very brilliant. He passed his matriculation from Gopalganj Missionary School in 1942, IA (twelfth grade) from Islamia College, Calcutta (present Kolkata) in 1944 and BA from the same college in 1947. Inspired and impressed by Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, he·joined politics at the age of eighteen. In 1948, he involved himself into Language Movement. He became a minister in the cabinet of Fazlul Huq in 1954. With the imposition of Martial Law in 1958, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested and kept.detained without trial. In 1966, he put up the historic six-point for the self-determination of thê country and as a result, he was thrown behind bars by the Ayub Khan government. After mass 'uprising in 1969, he was released and. he achieved landslide victory 'in the parliamentary election but the military ruler Yahya Khan corispired and kept parliament postponed. Sheikh Mujibur. Rahman addressed a mammoth public gathering in the then Race Course on March 7,1971 and invoked the people for the struggle for freedom. He was arrested and on 25 March 1971, the Pakistani rulers started a bloody massacre. However, inspired by the 7th March speech of Sheik Mujibur Rahman,the freedom fighters of our country fought bravely for long nine months and ultimately forced the Pakistani occupation forces to surrender to the Joint Forces. Thus, we achieved our independence. For his great contribution in the Liberation War, Bangabandhu is called the Father of the Nation and is greatly respected. This great leader was assassinated on 15 August 1975 by some depraved, disgruntled army officials.
